Camp Pillsbury is a summer camp in Owatonna, Minnesota with plenty of exciting programs and activities to immerse international students into the American cultural experience. Camp Pillsbury can help international campers prepare for living in the U.S or just improve their English skills for future success. The English and American Culture Program explores the rich diversity that exists within the United States. Founded by immigrants from all over the world, what does it mean to truly be “American”? The seminar will have themes surrounding American identity and culture as presented in the media. Through these themes students will learn more about the complexities of American identity and society. Additionally, this seminar will examine ways in which students can engage with Americans in their future academics. This will be accomplished by introducing students to members of the community-at-large.

ISM’s ELL Summer Camp is designed for English Language Learners to learn English or improve their English as they enjoy everything Minnesota has to offer. Students in grades 6 – 12 will participate in exercises and activities that will stretch and solidify their written and spoken English beginning with classroom activities in the morning followed by afternoon cultural activities organized to practice emerging English skills.
Students will reside in ISM’s three-story, 20,000-square-foot residence hall which provides housing for up to 32 students and includes a theater, recreation center, laundry, study areas, and fitness center.

Summer English Language Experience | Ages 11-17 American Cultural Experience • English Language English classes are held in the morning, and each afternoon students use what they learn while interacting with American students on trips to the Mall of America, a professional baseball game, swimming, the Science Museum of Minnesota, Minneapolis Institute of Art, Minnesota Capitol building, and many others.
Within walking distance of the campus are shops of over fifty varieties, including several ethnic restaurants and four major department and electronic stores.
The St. Croix complex includes a lake, park, spacious athletic fields, a gymnasium, computer lab, 152-bed dormitory, entertainment room, and cooking staff.
University of Minnesota Crookston offers summer ESL program! In the program students study English to improve classroom communication skills. Students also become accustomed to American teaching style and techniques, learn study skills for success in an American university classroom, and through various activities and excursions become more familiar with American culture.

Our program focuses on ESL, but includes elements of American classroom culture and tips for success as well as overall university readiness. Primarily participants are students joining American university in the fall, either at UMC or at other schools, who wish to improve English communications skills and build confidence before starting.

“Global Transit Innovations Summer Training Program: Transportation and Urban Planning” is a program co-hosted by University of Minnesota Global Transit Innovations, UMN Center for Transportation Studies, and UMN China Center Mingda Institute for Leadership Training. This program created a platform for Chinese students so that they could be able to study overseas and experience American culture. Students will also have chance to listen to workshops presented by UMN well-known professors and visit transportation/urban planning related places.
